A dimensional, handcrafted greeting card made from layered paper and glue.
Maine's first state flag, adopted in 1901, used just two symbols to represent the state: an Eastern White Pine and the blue North Star. The pine reflected Maine's forests and maritime history, while the North Star connected the flag to our state motto, Dirigo, meaning “I lead.” More than a century later, those two simple symbols are still unmistakably Maine, appearing throughout the state and even on our license plates.
Our original Maine 1901 Flag artwork interprets this historic symbol in paper. The Eastern White Pine and North Star are created from individual pieces of paper, precision-cut by machine, then positioned, layered, and glued by hand.
Dark green glitter paper forms four distinctive whorls of branches along the exposed trunk of the Eastern White Pine. Dark brown paper with irregular cutouts creates the trunk, revealing matte black paper beneath to add definition and texture. A reflective blue foil North Star shines above it.
Send the Maine 1901 Flag across the miles as a little piece of Maine, or give it to someone closer to home. The card is blank inside, leaving plenty of room for your message.
