A dimensional, handcrafted greeting card made from layered paper and glue.
Lobster boats are part of Maine's working waterfront, their distinctive shape developed around the job they were built to do. The high bow meets the sea, the wheelhouse sits forward, and the open deck behind it gives lobstermen room to haul and handle their gear.
A red and white lobster boat we spotted near Camp Ellis on the Saco River inspired our original Lobster Boat at Sea artwork. To translate that familiar Maine working boat into paper, we reduced its distinctive silhouette to the shapes and details that make it immediately recognizable.
The lobster boat, waves, and seagulls are created from individual pieces of paper, precision-cut by machine, then positioned, layered, and glued by hand.
Metallic red and white papers form the hull, wheelhouse, and open working deck, with matte black paper defining the windows and other small details. Four individually cut waves of reflective blue foil carry the boat across the water; their slender shapes add movement without competing with the heavily layered boat above them. Three small gray paper seagulls circle overhead, because apparently even a paper lobster boat can't escape the gulls.
The lobster boat may be built for hauling traps, but this one has another job. With a blank interior, this greeting card is ready to carry encouragement, a celebration, a hello from Maine, or whatever message you want to send across the miles.
