Finding the Right Words

Updated: May 19

If you’ve ever chosen a greeting card and felt unsure what to write inside, this post offers simple phrases for thank you, encouragement, comfort, and staying connected.

We use words constantly. Text messages, emails, captions, comments, voice notes, podcasts, meetings. We read them, send them, skim them, and move on.

Writing a message inside a greeting card is different. The message is written by hand, taking shape in real time. There’s no perfect font, undo button, spell check or grammar tool. The words stay where they're scribed.

For a lot of people, that’s where the pressure shows up. There's a belief that the message has to be perfect. We fear that a misspelled word, an awkward phrase, or a visible scratch-out will ruin the card, as if the mistake cancels out the intention behind it.

This is often where people stop, pen hovering, unsure how to begin even when they know exactly what they want to convey.

That moment of hesitation is more common than most people realize. It shows up when saying thank you, offering encouragement, apologizing, and even when sending a simple card to stay connected. The moments may change, but the pause looks the same.

The good news is that meaningful messages don’t require polish or perfection, just a few heartfelt words.

I've written some simple phrases to help you find the right words so your card can reach the person or people you care about.
