Red and White Lighthouse | Maine Symbols Card
What started as a simple lighthouse silhouette changed once we understood the purpose behind it. Maine lighthouses aren't designed to blend in. They're designed to be seen. Their colors, markings, and shapes all serve a practical purpose: helping mariners identify them quickly in changing weather and difficult conditions.
That insight led us to West Quoddy Head Light, the only lighthouse in the United States painted with bold red-and-white stripes. Located at the easternmost point of the country, its distinctive pattern was created to remain visible in fog, snow, and harsh coastal weather.
To create the card, we selected red and white glitter cardstock for the lighthouse body, along with layered paper details for the railing, windows, door, and lantern room. A warm yellow glow in the lantern room suggests a beacon in use, while a copper glitter top adds contrast and a reflective finish.
The result is a distinctive way to send encouragement, support, or a simple hello.
