Pine Tree and North Star | Maine Symbols Card

  • The pine tree and North Star tell a story of roots and direction. The pine tree represents where we come from, and the North Star represents where we're going.

Maine brought these ideas together on its original state flag. The design was intentionally simple, using a single pine tree and blue star to represent the state at a glance. The pine tree reflected Maine's timber history and the North Star represented Maine's motto, Dirigo, meaning "I lead." Though the flag was replaced in 1909, the pairing never disappeared. Over time, the pine tree and North Star became one of Maine's most recognizable visual symbols, inspiring countless interpretations across the state.

Learning there was no single "correct" version of the tree gave us permission to create one that felt uniquely our own. The tree in our design is inspired by the Eastern Hemlock on our property that serves as home to our bird feeder. We incorporated layered details to create depth and dimension while keeping the composition simple and direct, echoing the spirit of Maine's first flag.

To create the card, we selected emerald green glitter cardstock for the pine tree and reflective dark blue foil cardstock for the North Star. Brown and black cardstock form the trunk and outline details, while the layered paper construction creates depth and dimension throughout the design.

The result is a meaningful reminder that where we come from shapes where we're going.
